VINTAGE BDH MULTILINGUAL APOTHECARY BOTTLE
DAVEY & MOORE (c. 1940s–1950s)

Picture
PRICE: £22

An authentic and highly graphic post-war British pharmaceutical bottle, standing at an impressive 19.5cm tall with a 6.5cm cylindrical diameter. Crafted from rich honey-amber glass to protect light-sensitive medicinal syrups from ultraviolet degradation, this specimen showcases the striking corporate style of mid-century British chemistry. The base is cleanly embossed with the signature manufacturer's mark "D&M 14", denoting its production by the renowned London glassworks, Davey & Moore Ltd. The neck features a short, smooth collar designed for a ground glass stopper or cork closure.
This specimen features its rare, original cream and solid brown paper export label, displaying the famous corporate initials: "B.D.H" for The British Drug Houses Ltd., London. Reflecting Britain's post-war pharmaceutical expansion into international markets, the label prints the formula name across four languages in a clean non-serif typography: "SYRUP OF CALCIUM LACTOPHOSPHATE", "SIROP DE LACTOPHOSPHATE DE CALCIUM" (French), "XAROPE DE LACTOPHOSPHATO DE CALCIO" (Portuguese), and "JARABE DE LACTOFOSFATO DE CALCIO" (Spanish). The clinical details note the abbreviations "Syrup. Calc. Lactophosph., B.P.C.", alongside transitional dosage parameters providing both metric and imperial measurements: "2 TO 4 MILS" and "30 TO 60 MINIMS". The bottom is stamped "Manufactured in England".

Condition:
Offered without a stopper, the robust amber glass body is in immaculate structural condition with no chips, cracks, or surface clouding. The original paper label is well-preserved with sharp typography, displaying an authentic, minor historic tear in the upper left corner which adds genuine period character and provenance. A fantastic, highly visual showpiece that serves as an excellent companion piece to mid-century Scientifica collections or layered apothecary shelf arrangements.

Dimensions:
  • Height: 19.5cm
  • Diameter: 6.5cm
