ANTIQUE IMPERIAL GLASS APOTHECARY MEASURING CONE GRADUATED WITH GOVERNMENT BROAD ARROW MARK
(c. 1890s–1910s)
|
PRICE: £45
A remarkably scarce Late Victorian to Edwardian clear glass apothecary measuring cone, offering an exceptional combination of pharmaceutical utility and official British history. Unlike standard cylindrical vessels, this specimen features a distinctive conical body that elegantly widens from the base to the rim, terminating in a hand-formed pouring spout and resting on a short, flat circular pedestal foot. The scientific and historical significance of this piece lies in its elaborate, hand-engraved measurement scales split across two sides: On one profile, the glass features a simple vertical line intersected by ten hand-wheel-engraved horizontal increments, showcasing the artisanal nature of early laboratory calibration. The primary functional face displays highly comprehensive regulatory markings. To the left of the central hand-engraved scale, a frosted, acid-etched grey rectangle encloses the markings "IMPERIAL PINTS 1/4 1/2", topped by the official British Government "Broad Arrow" (pheon) symbol. To the right of the scale, a matching frosted rectangle reads "FLUID OUNCES", tracking the numerical increments "1 2 4 5 6 8 10", and is similarly crowned with the Broad Arrow verification mark. This mark confirms that the vessel was officially inspected, stamped, and approved under the Weights and Measures Acts for government, military, or official institutional dispensary use. Condition: Offered in excellent antique condition. The clear glass structure remains entirely stable and robust, without any cracks, structural fractures, or notable chips along the rim or foot. The glass shows expected, charming primitive characteristics including tiny enclosed air bubbles from production. The hand-engraved lines and frosted official rectangles remain crisp, deeply defined, and fully legible, presenting outstanding display appeal. Dimensions:
