PRICE: £38
A beautifully crafted Late Victorian to Edwardian clear glass apothecary measuring cone, designed for the highly precise compounding of potent pharmaceutical liquids. This elegant scientific vessel features a tapered conical body resting on a flat, circular pedestal foot and terminates in a finely formed pouring spout. This specimen exhibits exceptional glass-engraving work, characterized by uniform and highly regular calibrated scales split across two profiles: One side features a clean, unlabelled vertical line with regular, anonymous horizontal increments used for quick volumetric reference. The primary face displays a sophisticated, formal layout. The central measurement scale is flanked by two distinct, acid-etched or wheel-engraved rectangles. Reflecting the decorative craftsmanship of the era, the top of each cartouche elegantly curls into a classic parchment scroll motif. The left-hand scroll is inscribed "FLUID OUNCES" and tracks the precise micro-fractions "1/2 1 11/2 2". The right-hand scroll is marked "FLUID DRACHMS" and lists the corresponding internal increments "1 2 4 6 8 12 16" (with 8 drachms traditionally equating to exactly 1 fluid ounce), allowing the chemist to measure minute doses with absolute accuracy. Condition: Offered in excellent antique condition. The clear glass structure is beautifully preserved, completely free from cracks, fractures, or chips on the pouring rim and pedestal base. The engraved lines and decorative scrollwork borders remain exceptionally sharp, crisp, and fully legible, offering a superb combination of scientific utility and aesthetic charm for display.
