Large quarto, bound in beige morocco by the publisher, with illustrated boards featuring a gilt elephant's head encircled by a radiant plume design and a floral border in black, red, and gold, accented with fine and bold gilt fillets, decoration signed by SOUZE. The spine is smooth, adorned with black and gold peacock feather motifs, and the edges are gilt. 807 pages + 1 illustrated with 317 engravings drawn by leading artists of the time, based on sketches and photographs by the author, along with 6 maps, 5 of which are in colour, and a frontispiece depicting the author in Sirdar costume from the court of Bhopal.
