AUTHENTIC VICTORIAN MEDICAL MAGNETO-ELECTRIC THERAPY MACHINE - S. MAW, SON & THOMPSON (c. 1870-1901)
|
PRICE: £150
A classic and highly evocative piece of Late Victorian medical engineering. Designed during the 19th-century boom of electrotherapy to treat various nervous disorders, hysteria, and acute neuralgia, this magneto-electric machine was manufactured by the renowned S. Maw, Son & Thompson of Aldersgate Street, London—the premier supplier of surgical apparatus and medical furniture to the British Empire during the Victorian era. Housed in its original solid mahogany case, which exhibits a rich, deep antique patina and prominent graining, the box opens to showcase a magnificent, complex mechanical landscape. Inside rests an intricate brass wheel mechanism, heavy horseshoe iron magnets, and dual wool-and-wire-bound bobbins. Crucially, the machine is in excellent, fully operational mechanical order; the gears turn smoothly via the original external folding brass winding crank handle, driving the internal rotation to generate the historic electrical current. Condition: The mahogany case is structurally sound and robust, complete with its original brass hardware, hinges, and lock plate (no key). This specimen is offered without the original paper instruction label historically pasted inside the lid, which is fully reflected in the competitive pricing. The unit comes remarkably complete with its authentic internal metal hand electrodes (cylindrical brass grips) and their original fabric-covered connecting cords. A fantastic, highly tactile centrepiece offering immense historical narrative power for an advanced curiosity collection or specialized Scientifica gallery showcase. Dimensions:
Please note: This historical medical apparatus is sold strictly as an antique decorative and collectable object for display. It is not intended for modern medical, clinical, or therapeutic application. Shipping Information:
