EDWARDIAN CERAMIC SLIPPER BEDPAN – S. MAW, SON & SONS HISTORICAL APOTHECARY & NURSING EARTHENWARE (c. 1900–1915)

Picture
SOLD OUT

A beautifully preserved early 20th-century white earthenware institutional "Slipper" bedpan, manufactured by the premier London surgical and pharmaceutical suppliers S. Maw, Son & Sons. This specialized sanitary vessel represents a classic piece of Edwardian hospital and home-care nursing equipment, engineered with a distinct wedge-shaped profile to optimize patient comfort.
The design features a smooth, sloping body that tapers from a maximum height of 14.0cm down to a low 2.0cm entry lip, allowing it to be easily positioned beneath a recumbent patient. An integrated ceramic loop handle (anse) at the rear ensures secure handling by nursing staff.
The interior wall near the handle features a crisp, legible transfer print in a refined blue-grey monochrome palette, providing historical clinical instructions: "SLIPPER BED PAN / [Decorative linear divider] / This Slipper should be passed under / the Patient, in front between the legs."
The underside bears the authentic, circular manufacturer's transfer stamp enclosing their central corporate emblem, surrounded by the typography: "S MAW SON & SONS / LONDON / TRADE MARK".

Condition: Offered in excellent structural and aesthetic condition. The thick white glaze retains its original gloss, remarkably free from the heavy crazing, deep staining, or hairline fractures common to historical sanitary earthenware. The transfer lettering on both the interior and the base remains 100% complete and perfectly defined.

Dimensions:
  • Total Length (including handle): c. 38.0cm
  • Width Profile: From 13.0cm to 20.0cm
  • Height Profile: From 2.0cm (at the lowest lip) to 14.0cm (at the highest point)

Please note: This historical medical artifact is sold strictly as a decorative and collectable object for display. It is completely obsolete and is not intended for any modern sanitary, clinical, or practical medical use.
