VINTAGE THACKRAY STAINLESS STEEL EAST-WEST RETRACTOR AUTOSTATIC SURGICAL INCISION SPREADER (c. 1950s–1970s)
|
PRICE: £35
A high-quality mid-20th-century autostatic surgical retractor, manufactured by the renowned British surgical instrument makers Chas. F. Thackray Ltd in Leeds, England. Expertly crafted from premium surgical-grade stainless steel, this robust instrument features a satin finish designed to withstand rigorous clinical autoclave sterilization. The mechanical architecture is highly sophisticated: the handle functions via a plier-like expansion mechanism controlled by a traditional wing-nut (vis papillon) and a curved, quarter-wheel ratchet bar (crémaillère). This system allows the operator to precisely lock the instrument open under tension, while a quick-release lever on the notched bar instantly collapses the mechanism. At the working end, the retractor terminates in two flat, spatulate metal tongues set at a fixed 45-degree angle from the main shaft, engineered to insert into and maintain surgical exposure. The frame is deeply and cleanly stamped with the official maker's marks: "STAINLESS STEEL" and "THACKRAY LEEDS ENGLAND". Condition: Offered in excellent vintage condition. The stainless steel structure is completely pristine, showing no rust, pitting, or deep scores. The mechanical ratchet, locking wing-nut, and spring-release mechanism are fully operational and move with smooth, crisp precision. The two 45-degree spatulate blades remain perfectly aligned.
