ANTIQUE LATE VICTORIAN CULINARY BOTTLE COCHINEAL FOR CONFECTIONERY & JELLIES (c. 1900s)
|
PRICE: £12
A wonderful piece of turn-of-the-century British culinary history, this small, cylindrical clear glass bottle was used for distributing cochineal—a traditional natural red food colouring. The interior of the glass still beautifully retains authentic, dry red powder residues scattered throughout the chamber, providing excellent historical context and colour. The bottle features a comprehensive wrap-around paper label that has darkened gracefully with age. The label is adorned with a charming botanical foliage border on each side and features the main title "COCHINEAL" set within an elegant banner. Below, the historical usage instructions remain completely legible: "FOR COLOURING CONFECTIONERY, JELLIES, BLANC-MANGE PUDDINGS, & c. / A few drops to be added gradually till the required colour is obtained." The base of the glass vessel is embossed with the production or mould number "4601". Condition: Offered without a closure. The clear glass structure is in excellent condition, completely free from chips, cracks, or structural damage. The wrap-around paper label shows a deep, aged patina with expected time-staining and light edge wear, but remains entirely intact with its decorative borders and text clearly visible. Dimensions: Height: 6.7cm Diameter: 2.8cm Please note: This antique artifact is sold strictly as a decorative and collectable object for display. The internal organic residues are historical and are not suitable for contemporary culinary use or consumption. Shipping Information:
