PRICE: £15
A classic late Victorian antique molded glass "Hamilton" or torpedo-shaped soda bottle. This iconic vessel represents a landmark in 19th-century industrial design, specifically engineered for the storage of highly carbonated mineral waters and ginger beers. The heavy-gauge, thick glass body is entirely cylindrical, measuring 18.0cm in length and terminating in a distinct pointed base (fond en pointe). This intentional design prevented the bottle from being stood upright, forcing it to be stored horizontally to ensure the liquid kept the organic cork stopper moist and swollen, thereby preventing the loss of carbonation. The glass exhibits a beautiful, authentic period pale aqua/greenish-blue tint, filled with charming character including original atmospheric air bubbles embedded within the melt. The neck features a heavy, thickly applied rim typical of late 19th-century manufacturing techniques. Condition: Presented in excellent antique structural condition, completely free from cracks, deep star fractures, or chips to the heavy rim. Reflecting decades of historic commercial transit in wooden crates, the exterior glass surface features numerous honest surface scuffs and scratches (griffures), providing a wonderful, authentic patina without compromising its structural integrity.
