RARE EDWARDIAN LOCAL ISLE OF WIGHT CHEMIST BOTTLE
GIBBS & GURNELL, RYDE (c. 1900s-1910s)
|
PRICE: £32
An exceptional piece of local Isle of Wight social history, this 12.5cm tall transparent glass apothecary bottle was crafted specifically for "GIBBS & GURNELL CHEMISTS, RYDE", with their historic trading name sharply embossed in bold relief across the front panel. Operating from their historic premises on Union Street, Ryde, this establishment was a cornerstone of Edwardian healthcare on the island. Featuring a traditional flat oval base (5cm x 2.7cm), this style of bottle was standard for dispensing medicinal syrups, tonics, and cough remedies of the era. The base displays a rare and fascinating historical maker's mark: a three-part divided hexagonal diamond logo belonging to the prestigious York Glass Company (Fishergate, York), showcasing a crisp letter "Y" while the flanking factory letters have softened elegantly with time and wear. Condition: Offered without a stopper, the clear glass exhibits beautiful antique light refraction and characterful air bubbles trapped within the walls from the old moulding process. Please note that this piece features a minor, authentic historic flake/chip on the outer lip of the neck; however, this does not diminish its structural stability or its exceptional display value. A highly sought-after regional specimen, perfect for a private gallery in Ryde or an advanced collection of English provincial chemist antiquities. Dimensions:
