LARGE ANTIQUE APOTHECARY DISPLAY JAR (c. 1880s-1900s)
TINCTURA CAMPHORAE COMPOSITA/PAREGORIC
|
PRICE: £65
An impressive 23.5cm tall Late Victorian clear glass apothecary shelf bottle, serving as an exceptional companion piece to traditional pharmacy displays. This imposing specimen features a rare, original premium 'Label Under Glass' (LUG) shelf cartouche, decorated with rich gold leaf work and a traditional black border. The antique script reads: "TR: CAMPH: CO:" for Tinctura Camphorae Composita, historically known across the British Empire as Paregoric—a famous, highly regulated anti-cough remedy famously containing camphor, benzoic acid, anise oil, and opium. The bottle is complete with its original, heavy clear glass square-topped stopper, which remains tightly stuck and sealed by age. This piece is empty, allowing natural light to pass beautifully through the clear antique glass, highlighting the thickness and imperfections of the period glasswork. Condition: Offered with magnificent, authentic distressed character. The gold shield shows some age-related flaking and chipping to the enamel artwork, which enhances its genuine old-world provenance and historical soul. The antique glass body itself is in excellent structural condition with no cracks or chips. A textbook narrative antiquity, perfect for creating height and depth in an advanced collection.
