TINCTURA VALERIANAE AMMONIATA (c. 1880s-1900s)
|
PRICE: £35
An authentic Late Victorian clear glass apothecary town bottle, standing at 17.5cm tall. This characterful specimen features its original, premium 'Label Under Glass' (LUG) shelf cartouche, decorated with rich gold leaf work and a traditional black border. Although the curved glass shield shows an authentic, historic fracture and loss in the centre, the hand-painted serif lettering remains clearly decipherable as "TR: VA(L)ER: AM:", denoting Tinctura Valerianae Ammoniata (Ammoniated Tincture of Valerian). This potent and famous Victorian nerve sedative was historically deployed to treat hysteria, nervous disorders, and insomnia. Exhibiting pure curiosity cabinet charm, the bottle is complete with its original, matching ground-glass stopper, which is firmly sealed by time. It holds an exceptional 4.5cm of the original, dark organic fluid compound deep within the antique glass—a captivating historical survival. Condition: The clear antique glass body is in overall excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The authentic, distressed look of the glass-shield label, combined with the rare, century-old fluid trapped inside, makes this a highly atmospheric narrative piece for a private gallery or a specialised Scientifica shelf display.
